Allium schoenoprasum

Chives are the smallest species of the onion family and are native to Europe, Asia and North America. Allium schoenoprasum is also the only species of Allium native to both the New and the Old World and is a perennial.

Culinary uses for chives involve shredding its leaves (straws) for use as condiment for fish, potatoes and soups. Because of this, it is a common household herb, frequent in gardens as well as in grocery stores. It also has insect-repelling properties which can be used in gardens to control pests. Although chives are repulsive to insects in general due to their sulfur compounds, its flowers are attractive to bees, and it is sometimes kept to increase desired insect life.

{special notes} 
Chive seeds germinate best when soil temperature is cool. Optimal germination temperature is 65F.
Seeds come housed in papery seed bracts. In order for these seeds to germinate more quickly seeds should be removed from the bracts by crumbling them between your fingers to allow the seeds to fall free of the bracts. If you’re starting chives indoors, place the pot in a dark spot with a temperature of 60 to 70 F until the seeds sprout, then move them into the light.

{how to plant} 
In spring or fall, direct seed onto well-prepared seedbed (covering very lightly with soil).  Chives started from seed may not be large enough to harvest for at least a year, but will mature in summer or early the following spring. Seeds can also be started indoors and then planted out after at least four weeks. Once established regular cutting helps keep plants vigorous and healthy and encourages spreading. Keeping flowers picked discourages dormancy in warm weather. No fertilizer is needed if planted in reasonably fertile soil. Older chive plants can be divided and replanted every three to five years.
